How DeltaDaily Works

Five steps. Ten minutes. Every day.

DeltaDaily turns real NPR news stories into structured speaking practice with AI feedback. No textbooks, no synthetic dialogues — just real content, real practice, and measurable improvement.

Step 1: Choose Real Content

Every morning, DeltaDaily delivers Editor's Picks — five curated NPR stories from sources like Up First, Short Wave, and Planet Money. New stories are added throughout the day.

Tap one story and you're ready to practice. No searching, no setup.

If you want something specific, you can also paste any NPR URL and import it directly. The system extracts the transcript, aligns it to the audio, and prepares it for practice — usually in under a minute.

Why real content matters: Generic language apps use synthetic scripts written for learners. DeltaDaily uses journalism written for native speakers. You hear real vocabulary, real pacing, real connected speech — the same English you'll encounter at work and in life.

Step 2: Listen with Sentence-Synced Transcripts

Every story has a full transcript aligned to the audio at the sentence level. As the audio plays, the current sentence highlights automatically. Click any sentence to jump to that moment.

What happens under the hood:

  1. AI speech recognition generates a timestamped transcript from the audio
  2. The system checks this against NPR's published web transcript and automatically corrects sound-alike errors
  3. Each sentence gets precise start/end timestamps so you can seek, loop, and practice at the sentence level

Prosody chunks: Toggle chunk coloring to see how native speakers break sentences into natural breath groups. This is how fluent speech actually sounds — not word by word, but in rhythmic clusters.

Our approach — depth over breadth: For non-native speakers, listening to one story ten times beats listening to ten stories once. Repetition is how you move from recognizing words to actually owning them — the phrasing, the rhythm, the connected speech. That's why every playback control (speed, A/B loop, repeat, sentence mode) is designed to help you master one story deeply before moving on.

Step 3: Practice Speaking with AI Feedback

Select any sentence, record yourself, and submit. The system transcribes your recording and scores it across four dimensions:

  • Pronunciation — per-word and per-phoneme accuracy
  • Fluency — natural pacing and flow
  • Prosody — stress, intonation, and rhythm
  • Completeness — did you say everything?

Each word gets a color-coded badge: green (good), yellow (close), red (needs work). Tap any word to see which specific sounds need attention.

Feedback that encourages, not overwhelms: Every submission gets two things you did well and one specific thing to work on. No long error lists. No red screens. You can always retake — improvement, not perfection, is the goal.

Most professionals stopped getting pronunciation feedback years ago. Colleagues understand you, so they don't correct you. DeltaDaily's AI fills that gap — giving you the honest, specific, encouraging feedback that the people around you won't.

Step 4: Build Vocabulary

As you read the transcript, you'll notice words worth remembering. Save them with a single click (desktop) or tap (mobile). Each saved word automatically gets:

  • A dictionary definition and IPA pronunciation
  • The original sentence where you found it
  • A translation into your language (12 languages supported)

Beyond the transcript: Install the DeltaDaily Vocab Chrome extension, and you can capture words from any webpage — news articles, Slack messages, documentation, research papers. Right-click any word to save it. Your saved words are highlighted on every page you visit afterward — passive reinforcement as you browse.

Drilling what you save: Saved words aren't just a list. DeltaDaily turns them into multiple-choice quizzes with spaced repetition and AI-generated fill-in-the-blank sentences. Everything syncs between the extension and the web app.

Step 5: Target Your Weak Spots

This is where DeltaDaily diverges from most language tools. Instead of moving on to new content, it circles back to the specific sounds and words you struggle with.

  1. Every recording you submit is analyzed for per-word pronunciation accuracy
  2. Words you score low on are automatically tracked for spaced-repetition review
  3. Weak words resurface inside Practice at the right interval, so you don't have to manage a separate list

The spaced-repetition engine adjusts on the fly: words you master get pushed further out, words you miss come back sooner.

The Daily Rhythm

DeltaDaily is designed for a daily routine, not marathon study sessions.

Morning (10–15 minutes)

  1. Open the app. Pick one story from Editor's Picks.
  2. Listen once without the transcript.
  3. Listen again with the transcript. Save 1–3 words.
  4. Record one sentence. Read the feedback. Try one more if you want.
  5. Done.

Anytime (2–3 minutes)

  • Open Focus Drills. Practice your Top-3 weak words.
  • Or review vocab flashcards in the extension popup while waiting for a meeting or coffee.

When you have more time (15–20 minutes)

  • Try a Roleplay scenario — pick from 28 built-in scripts or create a Custom Simulation tailored to your exact situation
  • Do an Executive Summary challenge — summarize a story in 60 seconds
  • Run Meeting Mode — practice workplace briefings and status updates
  • Review Analysis batches to see pronunciation trends over time

Why It Works

Real content, not textbook scripts

You practice with the same English you hear at work and in life. Your brain learns patterns that transfer directly to real conversations.

Feedback that fills the gap

After years in an English-speaking environment, nobody corrects you anymore. DeltaDaily does — specifically, honestly, and constructively.

Repetition where it counts

Generic apps repeat what they want to teach. DeltaDaily repeats what you need to learn. Spaced repetition ensures your weakest sounds get the most attention.

Small enough to stick

Ten minutes a day is enough. One story, one recording, one drill — that's already a good session.

Progress you can measure

Every recording is scored. Every weak word is tracked. Every session adds to your history. You can see yourself getting better — not in vague feelings, but in numbers.
